To obtain a Special Rigger License in New York City, applicants must be at least 18 years old, proficient in English, fit to perform the work, and of good moral character. They must pass a Department-sponsored exam within one year prior to application and complete Department-approved 16-hour and 32-hour courses for special riggers and suspended scaffold supervision, respectively, within the same period. Additionally, applicants need either two years of experience as a Special Rigging Foreman under a licensed Special Rigger or three years supervising the installation or use of suspended scaffolds in NYC.
The application process includes passing a practical exam, submitting the LIC42 form with a $350 fee, and scheduling the exam upon acceptance of the application. After passing the exam, applicants must submit required documents via the DOB NOW Portal, including the LIC2 application, background investigation questionnaire, experience verification forms, substance abuse attestation, and various identification documents. A background investigation fee of $500 and a license issuance fee of $100 are required.
Once the background investigation is passed, applicants must submit additional business documentation, depending on their business structure, to obtain the license. The business must be located in NYC and comply with zoning regulations. Approved applicants will schedule an appointment through the DOB NOW Portal to receive their Special Rigger license card. For detailed instructions, refer to the New License Application User Guide on the NYC Department of Buildings website.
